Not a Box! By Carla Butler

One of PreK’s favorite books is “Not A Box” by Antoinette Portis. The author encourages the reader to imagine a box not being “just” a box. Through the use of imagination and creativity, ideas are UNLIMITED!
In PreK on Monday, boxes could be seen EVERYWHERE!
They weren’t just cutely decorated Valentine’s Day boxes that would hold their holiday goodies. Most importantly, they were the  “Count The Ways We Love Math” projects.
This was the second year for this project and the students did an incredible job!
Several weeks ago, the empty boxes were sent home and parents/guardians were challenged to assist students in decorating the box with a math related concept.
The goal for this activity was to get them thinking early about the importance of Math in everyday life experiences and help develop their mathematical thinking.  They would also get an opportunity to work on their presentation skills as they shared their projects in front of their teachers and peers.
We had everything from addition and subtraction problems,  measurement, shapes, sorting, patterns and so much more. Many boxes were very interactive that included velcro where students could demonstrate working out various problems.
This year, we want to give a big shout out to our dads and grandparents. We had quite a few students to share that they assisted them. HOORAY for FAMILY INVOLVEMENT!
Thanks so much to everyone who synergized  with us to make this happen.
WE could not have done it without you!
