Interview with VT Rap Duo, Switch

Conversation with SWITCH – VT Rap duo, featuring Donovan Carter and Nathan Heathman. These guys are about to break out on the music scene with their first official single release “Bang Wit It”. Attention-worthy songwriting, great beats, and smooth production make it a perfect fit for the Billboard Charts.

It’s very clear that these two are motivated to write music. Two very talented aspiring musicians seem to have a maturity about their music that is beyond their age. Their talent and dedication give them steps above any competition. The music is strong, well-composed, and thoughtfully written.

We spoke with Carter and Heathman, and they explained their writing process and perspectives on how it all began.

Donovan Carter: “We are a rap duo, our name is Switch. The name has changed a bunch of times, but it started around 8th grade (3 years ago) and we’ve both been here since 8th grade, we’re Juniors now. During our Freshman year, there was this old storage closet that was lost and found, and they cleaned it out. We thought, hey, we can build a studio here. We started the project, but, a lot happened during Freshman year.”

Nathan Heathman: “We got heavily into basketball and it took time away from building [the studio] and by the time we got back to it, the Seniors then had finished it. It was a collaboration, definitely a group effort.”

Carter: “We’ve been using the studio off and on, anytime we have a cool idea and the time to, we just go in and record. As far as writing, we do get other beats from other beat creators, but I did, before 8th grade, start out making beats.”

Carter and Heathman both agreed that Carter is the most driven to be the lyricist for the group.

Carter: “Although I didn’t get too serious about music until middle school, I’ve been writing poems and raps since 4th grade. It’s always been a part of me, and something that I’ve done.”

Heathman: “Contributing and being able to bounce off each other whenever we make music is the best part about the way we write. In 8th grade, he told me he made music and wrote songs. I heard one, then the opportunity came up to collaborate, and definitely, we had to. I started to get a knack for it, and I’ve grown over the years as a musician, and we’ve taught each other a lot.”

They’ve just recently released their debut track, Bang Wit it, by SWITCH.  Give it a like and a listen!
